The ANZPAC Plastics Pact (ANZPAC) is a collaborative solution that brings together key players behind a shared vision of a circular economy for plastic, in which it never becomes waste or pollution.
Covering Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, ANZPAC is the first Plastics Pact in the Oceania region and the second regional Plastics Pact to become part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network. With Pacts in Africa, Europe, North America and South America, this network is a globally aligned response to plastic waste and pollution.
With over 100 Member organisations including retail giants such as Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Nestle and more, working together from across all three geographies and covering the entire plastics value chain, ANZPAC and its Members are committed to achieving four ambitious and concrete Regional Plastics Targets by 2025.
Companies that are a part of this pact will need to abide by its guidelines till 2025. The goal of this pact is to dramatically reduce plastic waste in both packaging and products. These companies will strive to move towards a more sustainable model by adopting compostable, recyclable, and reusable plastics.
Each company has a target that they aim to achieve by 2025. The main target is to use 100% recyclable plastic packaging. The businesses that are included in this pact will also try to recycle at least 25% of the plastic waste that they produce each year. This is a significant step towards reducing and ultimately nullifying the harm that is being done to the environment due to plastic waste.
In the past, the problem of plastic waste was largely ignored by large corporations and governments in Australia and many countries worldwide. So, this pact represents a general shift of mindset regarding the problem of plastic waste. Increasingly, many companies and governments now see this as a major issue and are working towards a more sustainable future and greener planet.
